Chilli peppers (also Hot peppers) 19 Jul, Astrid (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate): Don't be in a rush to get the seeds out. This year we've got a cold winter, so if you are sowing directly into the ground I would not sow earlier than mid September in Jhb North just to be safe. If you can start the seeds indoors you could sow early August, and plant out mid September. Plant in full sun at least 50cm apart. Make sure your plants don't dry out or your harvest will be affected. The best way to do this is to mulch well with organic matter around the plants (leaves, compost etc) to prevent moisture loss / keep moisture levels constant, but you will still need to water. When you see flowers develop, feed with a small handful (per plant) of Vita Veg Fruit & Flower - don't dig it in, just sprinkle around the plant. Leave your bushes to overwinter, they might survive!

You could start inside in August but would have to provide warmth for them to germinate. Put them outside as soon as they germinate otherwise the might grow leggy, very tall and thin, looking for sunlight.

Preparing soil takes a few weeks or months before planting. If you prepare your soil properly you add compost and even manure to it 2-3 months before planting. Dig soil 250-300mm deep.

A good loamy soil with plenty of compost added to it will grow just about all vegetables. As long as you have a sufficient supply of nutrient and water you can grow things in anything, water, sand, pebble, soil, straw etc.

Broad Beans (also Fava bean) 08 Jun, Anonymous (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate): You should prepare your ground/soil a few weeks/months before you plant things. Mix in compost or add some mulch and wet it and turn it over a few times to break it down over a few months before planting. Add some composted manures etc. Also some blood and bone. If you do that then you don't need much fertiliser. If your soil is rich now it don't need anything. If you have poor soil just use a general gardening fert 10-13N 2-4P 3-6K. Or buy an organic fert - they are about 4N 2P 3-4K.
