Onion 03 Sep, Anonymous (South Africa - Semi-arid climate): Work out your climate type from the Blue climate Zone tab at the top of the page. Then check the planting guide. You may have planted out of season or at the very end of the season. Usually if something grows really well but doesn't produce a crop your soil is too rich, too much nitrogen.

Rhubarb 18 Aug, Anne (South Africa - Semi-arid climate): How should the rhubarb be kept over winter if kept in a pot? I believe they need the cold period. My young plant looked half dead until I put it in our warm light grow room for now, but I believe that wouldn't be a year round solution, is that right?

Celery 01 Aug, MARIO (South Africa - Dry summer sub-tropical climate): Hi, We’re growing celery from the base of the stalks, about 1/2 cm thick, Place them in a tray with a small film of water. Leave near a sunny window for around 10 days adding a little water each day. When the stalks are about 5c. high and the roots have grown we plant as you normally would. Didn’t believe it but the stalks a re growing well. Anyone else doing this? .

Celery 16 Aug, Regina (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate): Yes, you can tell how fresh your produce you buy from supermarket is. We also regrow onion, lettuce, broccoli and cauliflower. We put onion in water until roots regrow then into ground, same with lettuce, we put broccoli and cauliflower in ground and started growing before winter and then the rats decided they were hungry so didn't get to grow a head of replanted stem.

Tomato 03 Aug, Anonymous (South Africa - Semi-arid climate): My daughter recommends a big container, about 30+ liters. A general all round garden fertiliser, make sure you mix about 2-3 handfuls into the soil before you put the soil in the container.

Chilli peppers (also Hot peppers) 22 Jul, Christal van der Byl (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate): I live in the Eastern Cape and my mom makes and sells chilli paste. I am thinking of growing the chillies ourselves because it can get difficult to find chillies. What advice do you have to make sure that we always have chillies growing? I will be making wooden creates / boxes to grow the chillies in, because the soil on our land is not very fertile if I grow but it will be outside and in the boxes I can move them around for different times of the year where the sun will be catching best.

Chilli peppers (also Hot peppers) 23 Jul, Anonymous (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate): I feel you would have more chance of a good crop if you planted in the ground than in boxes or crates. They need to be in sunlight all/most of the day. They are a spring through autumn crop I think, I have never grown them. You need to improve your soil by adding compost and manures regularly, yearly. Soil is only the medium that plants grow in. All soils need to have nutrients added to them, compost, manures, mulch that breaks down, fertilisers etc. Do some internet research on how to grow them.
