Cabbage 15 Feb, David R (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
I was a small crops farmer for 20 years growing cabbages, the trick to keeping grubs out is to spray twice a week for 2 weeks from the time of transplanting & then once a week after till they are half grown then only spray if Grubs appear till Harvest
Carrot 15 Feb, David (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Cris, a sack bag over the seed will keep the soil moist and the Carrots will come up then remove the bag I have also used dryed grass clippings they work well
Tomato 15 Feb, Marissa (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi everyone I have 8 tomatoe plants and experiencing a lot of leaves wilting, fruit rotting at the bottom but the top half is still green plus little black flying insects attacking it and laying eggs in it so when I cut a tomato in half it has maggts inside. Can anyone tell me what to do?
Eggplant (also Aubergine) 15 Feb, 2 green thumbs (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Dear Roz, I have just had an explosion of Corriander from seed in seedling trays. I was given fresh seeds off a friends plant, which I dried in a paper bag til brown, then planted them in a seedling tray filled with seed raising mix. Maybe try that.
Silverbeet (also Swiss Chard or Mangold) 15 Feb, Sophie (Australia - temperate climate)
Why do silverbeet stems sometimes turn grey after being cooked?
Coriander (also Cilantro, Chinese parsley) 14 Feb, Julie Lake (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Mainly for Ashley at Tweed Heads - I live at Tamborine Mtn and have grown coriander for years - rule is, plant seed in autumn (or buy young plants in winter) and grow through winter, harvest in late spring. Save seed and sow again in, say, April-May. Don't even think of trying to grow in summer!
Rosella (also Queensland Jam Plant, Roselle) 13 Feb, june donnelly (Australia - tropical climate)
my rosella bushes have small beetles like weevils on them and these pests are eating tiny holes all over the leaves. I feel that they will eat the tender flower buds when they come out. what can I do about them. I grow rosellas every year for making jam and find that they prefer to be under watered rather than over watered for flowering. r
Chilli peppers (also Hot peppers) 13 Feb, Beverley (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
My Birds Eye chillie plants are now approx. 5 ft high covered in tons of little chillies - do you prune chillie plants? - first time chillie grower!!!.
Chilli peppers (also Hot peppers) 22 Jun, (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
I am not sure how to pick chillies,do you cut the stem or pull off from the base of chilli
Chilli peppers (also Hot peppers) 16 May, Dennis (Australia - temperate climate)
leave the whole stem on the chillie.
Chilli peppers (also Hot peppers) 25 Jun, (Australia - temperate climate)
In the supermarket they all seem to have a bit of stem still attached, so they've been cut off. I normally cut them, as if they are ripe then pulling them will split the fruit and cover your hands with chilli juice.
Pumpkin 13 Feb, Sarah (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Hi, I have a very long kent pumpkin vine but no flowers. It's planted at the same time and place as Golden Nugget (which is doing great) and Butternut (doing okay). Any thoughts on why the kent isn't flowering?
Pumpkin 09 Feb, bob mccouaig (Australia - temperate climate)
same problem Is kent a slow flowerer Be grateful for any tips
Pumpkin 17 Jan, Glenda de Vidas (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Pumpkins form with flowers still attached and then the pumpkin rots. I am now removing the healthy flower before the pumpkin starts to rot to see if that will allow the pumkin to grow properly. They are the kent variety of pumpkins. Has any one have any tips to share.
Beans - dwarf (also French beans, Bush beans) 13 Feb, Rikkyurk (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
I have tried growing from seed twice and only one from 40 seemed to germinate. I am sowing in rows 1.5 - 2cm deep. As directed on the packet I didn't water for 3 days after sowing. They were a fresh packet of seed too. Any tips?
Beans - dwarf (also French beans, Bush beans) 01 Oct, Monty (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
A tip I saw on a TV show for getting beans and peas to germitate suggested soaking the seeds overnight in water with a pinch of epsom salts. The magnesium is supposed to activate an enzyme in the seed which triggers sprouting. I have done this once with dwarf beans and once with braod beans and have got 100% (8 out of 8) germination both times.
Pumpkin 11 Feb, Suzanne (Australia - temperate climate)
Pumpkin seeds should be planted in spring / early summer, but I have just planted my seeds and they are doing great, bit late but I'll see how they go....
Sweet corn (also corn, maize) 11 Feb, T (Australia - temperate climate)
Having grown baby sweetcorn for the first time, the silks are red in colour at the moment can someone inform me when is the right time to pick baby corn, is it the same rule as normal corn? where the silks should be brown?
Sweet corn (also corn, maize) 09 Aug, Ann-Marie (Australia - tropical climate)
Baby corn is picked much earlier than normal corn. The silks should be just emerging ( aprrox 1 cm long) and still soft. I find that the silks just poking out can be ready that evening or the next day as they grow very fast.
Beans - dwarf (also French beans, Bush beans) 11 Feb, Hellbelle (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
My bean plants were growing really well, but now the leaves seem to be dying off just as they're starting to flower. The ends are going brown - they look like they're burnt but i'm sooo careful when i water to make sure the leaves stay dry....any tips???
Sweet corn (also corn, maize) 11 Feb, Jason (Australia - temperate climate)
Just seeking opinions on whether my current run of corn is 'normal'. Planted Sun & Snow corn the week before Christmas and it has gone completely nuts. The block seems to have topped out at 2.3mtrs in full tassel... but I have 3 to 4 extra tillers on each plant and they are producing tassels and silks completely independent to the centre stalk. 7 of them even have side tassels at the 2mtr marker. The cobs that are forming are averaging just over 20cm in length and between 6-7cm in width. I'm only new to growing and was completely wrapped when they took off. Is this a standard result or something alittle more special?
Spring onions (also Scallions, Bunching onions, Welsh onion) 10 Feb, trevor (Australia - temperate climate)
I have trouble growing spring onions from seed. i plant them directly in the ground and also in a mini greenhouse using seed raising mix. both plantings don't seem to produce. WHY?
Spring onions (also Scallions, Bunching onions, Welsh onion) 02 Sep, Cygnetian (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Hi Trevor, Have you tried planting the roots cut off from purchased spring onions? You cut them off about 1.5 cm from the base and then plant them. Works for me. :)
Spring onions (also Scallions, Bunching onions, Welsh onion) 30 May, Diana (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi! I live in Adelaide where the summer is really hot. Is your place really hot in Febuary? I sowed spring onion seed during summer and had very poor germination rate almost none. However since End summer germination rate 80-99%. Usually in the seed packet it says you could sow all year round. But I think if it is too hot the seed won't germinate.
Chilli peppers (also Hot peppers) 10 Feb, phil (Australia - temperate climate)
i have 1 chilli plant in a large pot with other herbs on my balcony. some thing is eating the leaves. what would it be & what can i do to prevent is?
Florence Fennel (also Finocchio) 10 Feb, Janet (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
That explains why my fennel just grew up and went to seed without growing a bulb. I planted it in late spring but it obviously should have been late summer/autumn.
Carrot 10 Feb, Lem (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Hi everyone. I have planted purple carrots in Dec. For some reason they have an awful bitter taste. Is this due to the variety or an extremely hot summer? They seem to be growing well and fast and the tops are a lush green. Could someone please help me.
Marrow 09 Feb, mel (Australia - temperate climate)
how long will it take to harvest marrow
Tomato 08 Feb, Claudia (Australia - temperate climate)
My tomato leaves are yellowing and dying off but I still have plenty of fruit which has been ripening daily. I used the Diggers seeds for the first time and have Tigerella & Tommy Toe Reds. They are in old steel caged plastic water tanks just over 1 meter squared. If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it as this is my first time at planting & want to maintain fruiting as long as I can. Thanks
