Sweet corn (also corn, maize) 08 Feb, Leigh Geil (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
first time growing corn for me. Doing well but now I have heard that it's better to remove side shoots leaving only one main stalk? 4-5 cobs on each plant but plants are only 60cms high.
Rosella (also Queensland Jam Plant, Roselle) 08 Feb, Terese Longwill, Brisbane (Australia - temperate climate)
I planted my rosella bushes last November (same time as I did the previous year) but todate still no flowers on them. When will they be ready for jam making? I picked last yr crop end of March and made jam. Can you help me with info. on how long after flowers appear from planting in November.
Spring onions (also Scallions, Bunching onions, Welsh onion) 08 Feb, Adrian (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
A simple suggestion for would-be spring onion growers! Instead of all the cost, hassle and time that it takes to get a crop of spring onions from seed, I just buy myself a bunch of thin spring onions at the supermarket and plant them 3 inches apart in well mulched and limed soil. The last bunch I bought had 45 plants which I planted yesterday and will be ready to progressively use in 10 days time, when they have thickened a bit, for some 4-6 weeks. It's fool proof and guaranteed to give you an instant spring onion patch. Even though it may be cheating a little. Cost $1.99 compared to $4.95 for a packet of seed.

Rosella (also Queensland Jam Plant, Roselle) 03 Feb, Helen Hoare (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Eric I have two types of Rosella plant. One is a more open bush with three pronged leaves, the other is bushier and the leaves have five prongs. At this stage the three pronged bushes are fruiting, but nothing is happening with the other bushes. Does this sound like the ones you have, and is it normal they take longer to fruit?
Celeriac 03 Feb, sonja oudhoff (Australia - temperate climate)
I buy the celeriac bulbs ( with the smaller roots still attached) from the supermarket and allow them to re establish themselves, then I wait for it to go to seed, and in the meantime I am still able to pick the stalks and use them in my cooking. It works for me :)
Tomato 03 Feb, Homebrewpig (Australia - cool/mountain climate)

how do you stop cucumbers going soft after you pick them
Luffa (also Loofah, plant sponge) 02 Feb, Celeste (Australia - tropical climate)
Loofas will tolerate the dry conditions but will grow pretty much anywhere.I have always left the sponges dry on the vine. What are the advantages of peeling them green other than the whiteness? My vine is now two years old.It diddn't get cold enough last year to kill it off. As this is the first vine I grew where I live now, I'll be interested to see if it survives another year and how it behaves.

Chilli peppers (also Hot peppers) 02 Feb, Steve (Australia - temperate climate)
Hey, I raised some plants in the seed tray (with lid) they grew very tall and thin over about 2 weeks. Still only 2 leaves and no real leaves. I put them outside for a bit and some shrivelled up. Was it too sudden a change for them?
Silverbeet (also Swiss Chard or Mangold) 01 Feb, gary (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Raelene and Dee, With silverbeet you can harvest and use the outer leaves leaving the central ones to continue growing. We tend to harvest them when they're around 20-30cm long including the stem. The older outer leaves can get a bit tough.
Rosella (also Queensland Jam Plant, Roselle) 01 Feb, Colleen O'brien (Australia - temperate climate)

Potato 01 Feb, Adele (Australia - temperate climate)
Is it ok to plant potatoes if they are in shade in the morning and get full afternoon sun? Adele
Sweet corn (also corn, maize) 01 Feb, Ray Whitton (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
I have grown my sweet corn fairly close together and thought I had done everything properly. Once again though I find that the kernels are well under developed....they are usually white and very, very small. I harvest them when the silk browns off as seems to be the rule but even then. I also have found that even watering every second day as we are only permitted in Canberra the leaves are still dying off. In fact the ones at the back of the crop nearest the galvanised iron fence are completely dead - anything to do with radiated heat? Thanks for comments.
Asparagus 31 Jan, Evelyn (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Thanks warren. I still have the old Mary Washingtons so may replant them into some really good compost and keep the manure up. Interesting that it took four years - may have to wait and see how they go with some TLC.
Luffa (also Loofah, plant sponge) 31 Jan, diane (Australia - tropical climate)
I'm fascinated at the idea of needing to plant luffa seeds :>) Seeds from dried fruit seem to grow wherever they land for me. Anyone want some?

Luffa (also Loofah, plant sponge) 30 Mar, donna (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
do Loofas grow in Canberra if protected from the frost or will the cold weather in general kill them? has anyone tried growing them in a cold climate?
