S = Plant undercover in seed trays. T = Plant out (transplant) seedlings.

  • Harvest in 14-28 weeks.
  • Grow in seed trays, and plant out in 4-6 weeks. Sow seed at a depth approximately three times the diameter of the seed.
  • Best planted at soil temperatures between 8°C and 21°C.
  • Space plants: 45-80cm

A form of celery which has a swollen root and lower stem. Raise seeds in individual pots and plant out after last frost to give them plenty of time to develop a good root. Grow in a very fertile, rich soil. Water generously.

In UK can be started under glass in March

I bought my seeds from the Italian Gardener. The plants are lush and healthy and I am using the fronds as celery but the root bulbs have not developed (been in ground now 24 weeks). I suspect that the soil was not sufficiently rich in compost etc.

I buy the celeriac bulbs ( with the smaller roots still attached) from the supermarket and allow them to re establish themselves, then I wait for it to go to seed, and in the meantime I am still able to pick the stalks and use them in my cooking. It works for me :)

theitaliangardener.com is a good source of seeds - celeriac & others. All 'celery' are tricky to germinate- an old piece of wool carpet over the top helps prevent drying out , which they are very sensative to, personaly I havent found them frost tender at all (& we get -5C a lot)!

Marinus, Try The Lost Seed, Eden Seeds or Green Harvest. All currently list celeriac seeds for sale. I've bought other seeds from each of these places and have been satisfied with their service and quality.
