Garlic bought is supermarkets is usually imported from China, and has been irradiated and will not grow, have tried without success. Found nursery near Montecasino in Sandton, owner of which grew garlic at home and sold the excess, he told me about this. Best places to look are nurseries or small greengrocers.

Watermelon 20 Mar, Kerry Porter (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
my Watermelon plant has just started bearing fruit. can the fruit get eaten by bugs or stung? what can i do to prevent this
Watermelon 29 Aug, Brendan (South Africa - Humid sub-tropical climate)
Hi Kerry, I make fruit fly traps to catch most of them as they destroy my fruit. Cut the top of a coke bottle off and invert it back into the base section. Make a small hole in the cap so the fly enters but cannot leave. In the bottle, place a piece of banana and add "Apple Cider Vinegar" Do not cover the banana completely. Once the banana starts to ferment in the vinegar the smell attracts the flies. Good Luck....

Hi my name is veronica live in kemptonpark I like growing spinach but my problem I see the leaves having holes I don't know what is eating it. How do I prevent this
Spinach (also English spinach) 04 Sep, Frans (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
Hi Veronica. I plant spinach for several years now and had the same problems. I saw that it can be caused by only 3 things. First it was these brown beetles coming out at night at sumer, then it was snails but last wasthe most devestating, I couln't see or catch the pest until I pick the worst leaves and gave it a good shake. I was surprised to see the amount of worms dropping down. They were camouflached very well. I got poison from my local agri depo and it was the end of them. They destroyed a third of my crop within two weeks.
