Florence Fennel (also Finocchio) 17 Apr, Andrew S (Australia - temperate climate)
Late reply..but here goes.. all I do is a mix of compost or worm castings..maybe with a dash of seaweed solution or worm juice. Even a crop of peas just to help break up the soil a bit with a nitrogen fix.
Yacon (also Sunroot) 23 Feb, Gill (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Does anyone have experience in growing yacon in cold areas (eg Canberra)?
Yacon (also Sunroot) 06 Nov, Noodle (Australia - temperate climate)
I grew yacon when I lived in canberra. It grows very well in that climate.
Eggplant (also Aubergine) 23 Feb, Savithri (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi, After so many attempts, I managed to grow eggplant(Lebanese) this year and was rewarded with quite a good crop. My problem is, the skins get eaten by some kind of pest and they look awful. Would anyone know what it could be? Thanks in advance - Savithri

Look for snails
Eggplant (also Aubergine) 25 Mar, Savithri (Australia - temperate climate)
thanks for the reply.....I didn't find any snails around but recently I noticed brown insect(Garden Weevils???) eating everything in my garden. They are attacking the leaves/stems and the young shoots of all the plants. How do you get rid of Garden Weevils? Thank you.
Pumpkin 23 Feb, Tess (Australia - temperate climate)
My Pumpkin plant, grown from seedling, is growing madly for the past 2+months however it hasn't flowered. What am I missing?

Shallots (also Eschalots) 22 Feb, Jane (Australia - tropical climate)
So, just wondering, do the same rules apply for growing spring onions?
Lettuce 22 Feb, Dean (Australia - temperate climate)
I have planted 2 sorts of lettuce (cos and great lakes) as a first crop in some new planter boxes I just built. I used an organic mix of soil with a layer of horse manure underneath. The lettuces have grown really well from seedlings, with watering every 2nd night, but now they are really to pick, they are "leathery" and bitter. We have had some hot days this summer and I haven't given them any extra shade, they have direct sun for first 3/4 of the day. Should I take them out and start again, or pick whats there and hope they come again? Do you only get 1 growth with lettuces if you cut them out whole, or should I keep picking the leaves? Any suggestions will help, thanks
Salsify (also Vegetable oyster) 22 Feb, Adrian van Leest (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Two weeks ago I sowed 80 salsify seeds by inserting each vertically into the soil 5cm apart in rows 15cm apart with the blunt end of the seed at the top level with the ground. So far 58 plants have emerged and I have resown the empty spaces inbetween. I love salsify thinly sliced at an angle and fried with garlic in butter, just like abolone. Yum! Yum!
Salsify (also Vegetable oyster) 27 Mar, Adrian van Leest (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
A correction to my comment below. I have found that salsify seed forms roots from the blunt end of the seed (from where it was attached to its parent plant). And so it's best to sow salsify seeds by inserting the blunt end of the long seed down into the soil with the pointy end just jutting out ready for the sprouting plant to emerge.
Carrot 21 Feb, Dave (Australia - temperate climate)
Can you grow carrots in pots? I've got some concrete pots about 20cm deep x 20 cm wide x 60cm long with drainage holes
Carrot 27 Feb, Tracey (Australia - temperate climate)
Sure you can. Obviously a pot does limit the length a bit vs growing them in the ground, so choose a variety with a shorter root and pick them as baby carrots.
Eggplant (also Aubergine) 21 Feb, Andrew (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
My eggplant growing well but not turning fully black and are a yellow brown colour at base of eggplant is there something that can be done about this
Rockmelon (also Canteloupe) 21 Feb, Rex (Australia - temperate climate)
Re Rock-melon pollination I accidentally planted some coriander near a Rockmelon as I have never grown either one before and the coriander flowers encouraged lots of bees , which in turn assisted in pollinating the Rockmelon, so in future that will be my plan.
Okra (also Ladyfinger, gumbo) 20 Feb, Brian (Australia - temperate climate)
Alternatives to Pyretherum to deal with Perth bugs. What can I make up as low cost option?
Pumpkin 19 Feb, Sharon (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Hi Kev, I have tried milk with a few drops of natural liquid soap and that works quite well, if there only a few spots on each leaf. I have also read that neem oil is good, but haven't tried that yet. This year I had little time so I just cut off the worst affected leaves and treated the rest and that seems to have worked fairly well. But, I am no expert, just my experience so far. Good luck, Sharon
Coriander (also Cilantro, Chinese parsley) 19 Feb, Dayna (Australia - temperate climate)
Should I be keeping my plant out of direct sunlight? How often should I water it and at what temperature does it thrive?
Basil 17 Feb, Dion (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
When Basil is producing leaves on mass, I make up a big batch of simple pesto - normally using just basil, roasted almonds, lemon juice, and olive oil (plus maybe garlic, chilli, or cheese). It keeps very well in the freezer in take away containers, and it means I can bust out a Spaghetti Pesto in about 10 minutes. I would advise strongly against drying basil as it really tastes terrible - as does dried parsley and coriander. These herbs are really meant to be eaten fresh.
Yacon (also Sunroot) 16 Feb, Julie (Australia - sub-tropical climate)

Many people sell yacon from their gardens, look for it on allclassifieds.com.au during the winter time.

Parsley (also curly leaf parsley or flat leaf (Italian) parsley) 16 Feb, Robbie (Australia - temperate climate)
I think you should collect your seed and plant it the old gone is finished.
Rosella (also Queensland Jam Plant, Roselle) 15 Feb, Gwenne (Australia - temperate climate)
Rosella bushes in since November 2011 healthy but not flowering
Rosella (also Queensland Jam Plant, Roselle) 19 Mar, (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Same here - in fact we have lost a few really healthy Rosella bushes - think it was the excessive rain - the trunk of the plants went black
Rockmelon (also Canteloupe) 14 Feb, (Australia - temperate climate)
From three vines I have just one healthy rock melon growing. The others seem to form buds, grow a little, and then turn yellow and wither. Is this lack of pollination or soil deficiency?
