Hi Carmen it sounds like you aren't getting pollination. To help this along pick the male flowers (on ling skinny stems without fruit) and remover the petals then brush the pollen into the female flowers. this should help full fruit develop.

You've just got a different variety. Zuchinnis come in all sorts of colours, white, yellow, light green, dark green and black, and sizes round, button, finger as well as small and large. Happy planting & eating!

I have planted carrot seedlings ,they're growing very well by all indictions of the tops. They have been in for about 4 weeks now, what fertiliser should I use so that the tops don't grow excessively with smaller carrots down in the soil.?
Carrot 01 Nov, ray (United Kingdom - cool/temperate climate)
You shouldnt use a fertaliser on your carrots as it will cause it to split so it looks like it has legs, just make sure that they have plenty of water to prevent them from plitting and going woody
Tomato 31 Oct, Heather Masters (Australia - temperate climate)
My tomatoes are growing well, but they have started to exceed the 7' mark. Can I cut of the top of the bush so its not as high? Will this increase lower growth or will the plant go into shock and not produce?
Rockmelon (also Canteloupe) 30 Oct, Suzanne (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
I have just planted rockmelon seedlings & would like to know if they prefer cow manure, horse manure or chook manure, as I can get any of the above. Also on the seedlings punnet it says to grow them on a fence or trellis? I had not heard of this before? what benefits are there to this type of growing? Thank You.
Rockmelon (also Canteloupe) 01 Jan, Michael (Australia - temperate climate)
Suzanne, Do not use horse manure unless you compost it. Cows have 4 stomachs and any weed seeds are disolved. Do not make the mistake that l did & use horse manure. Horses only have one stomach & you will get a fine crop of weeds, year after year.
Rockmelon (also Canteloupe) 07 Jan, Suzanne (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Thank you Michael, I have lots of rockmelons on the vines, but when I picked 4 yesterday, only one was edible, due to little holes in the others and when cut open they had little fruit maggots in them! They have obviously been "blown" by something? What should I spray the other young ones with before I lose even more. It was so disappointing as the melons that I picked were ripe and smelt delicious!
Rhubarb 29 Oct, Cheryl (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Is it normal for rhubarb roots to grow on the surface. I have two roots from a 2 year old plant growing along the top of the ground. Could it be looking for more water. Thank you
Rhubarb 26 Mar, Ulla (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
What can be eating my rhubarb leaves? I can't see anything, but the chunks eaten look like it could be a large worm. Can I spray pesticide safely on to the leaves, ie, will the stalks still be safe to eat"? Thanks.
Pumpkin 29 Oct, Dana (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Dear Adam If you spray your pumpkins or squash with milk (diluted in water anything from 1 part milk 2 parts water if you are treating to weak solution of 1 part milk 10 parts water if you are preventing) you will NOT have ANY problems with mildew. The milk works better than anything you can get commercially. Cheers Dana
Broad Beans (also Fava bean) 29 Oct, Pam (Australia - temperate climate)
When do broad beans finish producing in Sydney, not quite sure when to start pulling them out. Also read it is good to dig the finish stalks into the ground. Is this a good idea. Thank you Pam
Broad Beans (also Fava bean) 01 Nov, Paul (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Hi Pam, I recall Peter Cundell (from ABC Gardening show in Tassie) talking about eating his broad beans at Xmas. So I would suggest your beans should continue producing til end of November. I'm in Melb and mine continue to produce til at around November 30-ish. After that I will be cutting my bean stalks off at around soil level, leaving the roots in the ground (and the nitrogen in those roots still in the ground) and planting my next crop next to the old bean roots. The rest of the stalk goes on the compost. Hope this helps.
Yam/Oca (also Oka) 28 Oct, John Studte (Australia - temperate climate)

Cabbage 28 Oct, Ellie (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi, I live in Toowoomba and am fairly new to growing vegetables. Can someone please tell me which varieties of cabbage and cauliflower to plant NOW, (end of October 2012) that might be ready for eating within a reasonable period of time. I have some small cabbage coming along now but would like to grow more to hopefully ensure a continuing supply for the family. Thank you in anticipation.
Pumpkin 28 Oct, ray (Australia - temperate climate)
How do you know male from female flowers
Pumpkin 29 Oct, CJB (Australia - temperate climate)
The female has a fruit at the base of it. Also them male has 1 part inside the flower, the female has multiple receivingbits
Rhubarb 28 Oct, Barbara Diveney (Australia - temperate climate)
My rhubarb plant flowered, is this normal. It is only in its second growing year. What is attacking my Rhubarb plant, the leaves full of holes and just when the plant was growing well, it just wilted. What kind of pest/s is the rhubarb plant subject to and how do I treat it.

Chinese cabbage (also Wong bok, wong nga pak, napa cabbage) 26 Oct, Lisa (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi. Can u eat all of the Wong Bok? Including the middle not so green bit?? Thank you
Chinese cabbage (also Wong bok, wong nga pak, napa cabbage) 14 Nov, Brian Larsson (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Yes, certainly. There are several Chinese recipes using all of the cabbage. Google 'Chinese cabbage in cream sauce', especially the HongkongTaste.com. It can also be chopped or julienned and used in stir fried vegetable dishes as a crunchy celery substitute.

Pumpkin 25 Oct, Adam (Australia - temperate climate)
Im just about to plant some pumpkins for teh 1st time. Read of many these comments & are quite useful. I have a great sunny spot with some shade through the day, clay soil & its an paddock that had cattle. I think im just going to scrap in this season but Im more worried about Midlew as the area I want to plant may be to wet if it rains. (I dont think it will rain much this year). Also I am interested in Iron Bark Pumpkin seeds, I wont plant this season, but would be great to trial for the next season.
Carrot 23 Oct, peter merriman (Australia - temperate climate)
why put a board over a row of carrots
Carrot 08 Mar, Alistair George (Australia - temperate climate)
I always use sacking on my carrots, I broadcast the seed rather than in drills that way I never have to thin .Keep the sacking wet until germination
Carrot 23 Oct, Liz (New Zealand - temperate climate)
The idea is to retain moisture while the seeds are germinating
Carrot 26 Oct, peter merriman (Australia - temperate climate)
Thanks for that Liz, I also found out that watering runs off the side of the board and not directly onto the seeds.
