Asparagus 05 Jul, Rupert (Australia - temperate climate)
I planted several crowns last season and let them grow into ferns. It is now July, and many of the ferns have not died down yet, but more questionable is the fact that several of the plants have sprouted new spears. Is this normal? Is it a sign of a mild winter? Should I just be letting these spears grow into ferns - they are a healthy size, big enough to harvest...
Asparagus 20 Jul, Russell (Australia - temperate climate)
I understand Rupert, my asparagus is the same. It hasn't realised it is winter. I ate a spear; it was crispy but lacked flavour.
Yam/Oca (also Oka) 04 Jul, yvonne o conor (Australia - temperate climate)
I'm not in any of the above locations. I'm in Ireland (temperate) and got a present of some Oka tubers last Christmas.--- I hadn't a clue what they were, but since they were tubers (I didn't have a clue what kind of tubers), I waited for them to sprout - as I would with potatoes - and then planted them in 2ltr pots and have been earthing them up as they grow. Will I transfer them to the ground? When? If I get a crop, what's the best way to cook them?
Horseradish 03 Jul, Dorothy (Australia - temperate climate)
Anyone have a source for the horseradish root in Perth?? Been casually looking for a couple of years now with no success. Dorothy

Horseradish 02 Sep, Anthony (Australia - temperate climate)
@Ian, which Bunnings mate? if you please> I am in Perth. I assume this is true horse radish? The one you make for the dip that goes with mustard on Polish snags??? I had some snags in Praha, wow...just WOW. Cheers Ant
Potato 03 Jul, vivianne (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
It is july 3rd 2013, i am planning to plant potatoes in bags out of the frost. Will they grown. oh yes i am in katoomba nsw 2780
Potato 05 Jul, Chris (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
July sounds a bit early for potatoes in Katoomba - I guess it might work if you can keep them completely protected from frost. I usually wait until September/October.
Yam/Oca (also Oka) 02 Jul, Robyn (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi I have just bought some tubers and am wondering when to plant them in the Newcastle area in NSW.
Yam/Oca (also Oka) 03 Jul, john studte (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi Robyn. They will let you know when to plant by sprouting. No need until then.Just keep them dry until then. John.
Kohlrabi 02 Jul, ken cassin (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
can you eat the leaves in salads as in raw and boiled for side vegs like spinage
Kohlrabi 26 Apr, David (Australia - temperate climate)
You sure can; my favourite green vegie last year was Kohl Rabi leaves as a fried stand alone green veg. It is worth growing just for the leaves!
Garlic 02 Jul, Mehmet Kolgu (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Hi There which vegies likes the chicken poo ???
Carrot 02 Jul, Germaine (Australia - arid climate)
I have just pulled up a carrot that has been planted for about 4 months and they are short stumpy and pale, why is this and what can I do? There are no bugs and the leaves are healthy.
Carrot 18 Jul, (Australia - arid climate)
Im replying to my own post as I thought the answer may be helpful for someone else, seems you should dig right down to the desired lenght of a good carrot, place some sugar cane mulch and dynamic lifter then top with soil and hopefully the carrots strive to get the dynamic lifter and will grow long and healthy. So Ive tried it and I will see how I go.
Snow Peas (also Sugar Peas, Mangetout, Chinese Peas) 01 Jul, Martin (Australia - temperate climate)
Planted snow peas in May growing great. Vines are favourites of my chooks. Lots of white flowers little pods. When do pods start appearing? Also looking at getting some seeds for next year. How do I do that?
Snow Peas (also Sugar Peas, Mangetout, Chinese Peas) 02 Jul, Germaine (Australia - arid climate)
I grow them yearly, just keep some of the peas and dry them out and plant again next year, it works for me
Garlic 01 Jul, Peter (Australia - temperate climate)
Providing the right nutrients is vitally important in order to maximise plant growth and yield.
Rosella (also Queensland Jam Plant, Roselle) 01 Jul, Pamela Faye (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Rosellas love the sandy soil of the Sunshine Coast. Given a drink when it's hot and fed slow release fertilizer the bush will produce an abundance of fruit. After taking the advice of Annette McFarlane on ABC radio, the rosella pods were harvested every few days and froze in packets until enough fruit was collected for Nan to make delicious pots of jam. Sharing the bush with one or two small grasshoppers wasn't a problem as the flowers bloomed in abundance in full sunshine. The jam is a treat!
Broad Beans (also Fava bean) 30 Jun, ron hutton (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
what fertiliser do i use for my broadbeans. potash ?
Broad Beans (also Fava bean) 03 Aug, Gene (Australia - temperate climate)
Broad Beans don't need any fertiliser. They produce heaps of nitrogen on their own and can be used as a green fertiliser crop themselves. Some people even grow two or three around their fruit trees in winter for the additional nitrogen they produce. When you're finished with the crop, don't pull them out. Cut them off and leave the roots in the ground to break down. It's ideal to use the plot for growing plants that need high nitrogen in next - such as your leafy greens.
Broad Beans (also Fava bean) 01 Dec, Celeste Archer (Canada - Zone 7b Mild Temperate climate)
Though Broad beans like all beans fix their own nitrogen, they still need micro nutrients, as well as phosphorus, and potassium (macro nutrients). I find that adding a dose of micronutrients to the just planted seed soil gets them going faster, I hear that phosphorus works like an alarm clock. I also hit them with any kind of manure I can source; chicken, steer, cattle, sheep, alpaca.. whatever.
Pak Choy (also Pak choi) 29 Jun, Karen maher (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Hi. I live in ballarat and as most people know it can get rather cold. I have four lop eared rabbits who just love bok choy. They are costing me a fortune. Lucky I love them. Is it possible to grow bok choy here. If so when would I plant them. Obviously I'm not a gardener but would like to have a go. Thanku karen.
Pak Choy (also Pak choi) 02 Dec, Dave S (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
I also live in Ballarat and gave grown bok choy almost year round. It produced well until about May last year, and I've been looking for some more for the garden since the beginning of spring but haven't seen much around locally. It does tend to bolt quickly during late summer but I find if I pick the leaves regularly it slows down a bit. Does tend to be very thirsty, too.
Radish 27 Jun, Alex (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
I started my radishes in seedling trays and when they started to bulge at the root I planted the between my tomatoes. With love and water I now have small cherry radishes about 2 weeks off being pulled.
Pumpkin 25 Jun, Peter (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
I have a vine full of pumpkins at present (late June) in Toowoomba. The frosts are killing the vine, what should I do about the pumpkins as they are not fully ripe yet?

Rhubarb 23 Jun, Helen Simmons (Australia - temperate climate)
