A good loamy soil with plenty of compost added to it will grow just about all vegetables. As long as you have a sufficient supply of nutrient and water you can grow things in anything, water, sand, pebble, soil, straw etc.

Leeks 14 Mar, Renata (Canada - Zone 5a Temperate Warm Summer climate): Home made bug spray. 3 cloves minced garlic 2 tbsp hot pepper flakes 2 tbsp dish soap 1 cup boiling water and 4 cups cold Put garlic, pepper flakes and boiling water into a glass jar and let sit 24 hours. Strain through cheese cloth or coffee filter. Add dish soap and cold water. Put into spray bottle and spray entire plant. Works well to deter most types of moth, beetles and worms. Even rabbits. I use this for years.

Ginger 10 Jun, Yggy (Australia - temperate climate): If you cut a piece off the root in the soil, isn't the part left exposed where you cut susceptible to rotting? I heard somewhere to leave the plant to harden the area a bit before planting, but i don't know how that is meant to work in the soil..

Ginger 11 Jun, Anonymous (Australia - temperate climate): You say you are temperate and by this guide they don't suggest growing in temperate. Best grown in tropic and sub-tropic. Plants are pretty tough sometimes. 2 options, break some off and leave the piece in the ground exposed to the air to dry. Or don't water it for a few days/week or so.

Ginger 14 Sep, Sandy (Australia - tropical climate): I grew ginger in an aquaponics set up in Perth. So it depends on where your temperate zone is. Full sun planted about now will give you results. Maybe not as good as tropical areas, but pretty good anyway.

Garlic 09 Jun, Anon (Australia - sub-tropical climate): Buy rooster booster from Bunnings or go to a farm produce supplier and buy an organic fert. Both of those may only sell 15-25kg bags. Or go and see if you can buy a smaller quantity from Bunnings nurseries or Coles Woolworths. You could try Seasol or something similar but make sure it has NPK %.
