(Best months for growing Collards in USA - Zone 5a regions)

  • S = Plant undercover in seed trays
  • T = Plant out (transplant) seedlings
  • P = Sow seed
  • Easy to grow. Grow in seed trays, and plant out in 4-6 weeks. Sow seed at a depth approximately three times the diameter of the seed. Best planted at soil temperatures between 46°F and 86°F. (Show °C/cm)
  • Space plants: 16 - 20 inches apart
  • Harvest in 8-11 weeks.
  • Compatible with (can grow beside): Dwarf (bush) beans, beets, celery, cucumber, onions, marigold, nasturtium, rhubarb, aromatic herbs (sage, dill, chamomile)
  • Avoid growing close to: Climbing (pole) beans, tomato, peppers (chili, capsicum), eggplant (aubergine), strawberry, mustard

They are also known as collards in Australia, but they're not very widely available. I ordered seeds from The Lost Seed. Unfortunately I'm unable to post the link but if you google it you should be able to find them.

have just read that collard greens wete tested against a leading cholesterol drug and found to be equally or more effective . did not say how much you have to eat though but they are a staple in soujthern USA

I received my collards greens seeds today in the mail. I got mine from www.australianseed.com, they're in WA. I live in campbelltown nsw and I'm very confident of growing a good healthy crop. :-)

Plant Aug Sept - if really hot protect them from the sun for some of the day. Shade cloth or something.
