Sweet corn (also corn, maize) 24 Dec, warren smith (Australia - temperate climate)
Hello My sweet corn is growing very well and developing kernels already. Trouble is that now they are starting to fall over as the root system has come up out of the ground. Have I done something wrong in the process? Should I stake them? Regards Warren
Turnip 23 Dec, pete (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
re turnip spacings - i think 10 cms would be plenty - just so long as they are not hard up against each other
Cucumber 23 Dec, pete (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
hi katja sounds like you have sooty mould. how i get around this is to grow my cucumbers on a trellis. just a post at each end and string about 9 inches apart between the poles. clip the cucumber leaves to the string with a clothes peg. keep stringing until they reach a height of about 5ft. the air circulation reduces the amount of sooty mould.
Zucchini (also Courgette/Marrow, Summer squash) 22 Dec, Tui (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
my plants are looking quite pale and stunted (light green to yellow) and I am getting male flowers that twist up and die before they open. What is going wrong?
Okra (also Ladyfinger, gumbo) 22 Dec, Dimpy (Australia - temperate climate)
I planted few okra seeds with seedling mix. They didn't show any groth for a month; then all of a sudden grown for about 3cm. But when transplanted in hot weather, none of them could survive. Any tips for saving them

Rosella (also Queensland Jam Plant, Roselle) 19 Dec, Glenda (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Sheila mentioned that she sells the plants. I'm in Brisbane and would love to buy 1 or 2 for my backyard. Where are you in Caboolture?
Garlic 19 Dec, Julie (Australia - temperate climate)
Well, the large garlic seems to have come good after all! I gave up on it and left it alone, but when I dug up a few, they had fomed cloves after all. I'm sure now that if I had continued to water them they would have split.
Cucumber 18 Dec, (Australia - temperate climate)
Does anyone know if possums eat baby cucumbers? I have plants that have been flowering for 2 weeks or more, but I cannot see any sign of fruit maturing. (Melbourne Australia)

Sweet corn (also corn, maize) 16 Dec, Pat (Australia - temperate climate)
The sweet corn I am growing is ready to pick but many of the cobs are missing the kernels. Some only a few others almost half the cob. The remaining cob tastes perfect and sweet. Any suggestions
Potato 14 Dec, Janet (Australia - temperate climate)
I've not had much success with potatoes in the past. My present crop seems to be OK but should I stake the plants as they are falling all over the place even though I've been adding more soil and straw. Also little bunches of green"fruit" have appeared on some plants. Anyone know what these are?
Zucchini (also Courgette/Marrow, Summer squash) 14 Dec, Catherine (Australia - tropical climate)
Hi Judy, I have the same red/orange bugs eating my zucchini leaves I think. Any info from anyone on this would be appreciated. My onion, garlic, chili spray didn't seem to deter them.
Leeks 13 Dec, Evelyn (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
I grew leeks for the first time and harvested the first one yesterday. It was flowering and it was the leek with the thickest stem. I must have done something terribly wrong as the stem was very hard and difficult to cut. Almost like cutting into a piece of bamboo. I did not cover the stems (blanching?) with soil but let them grow normally - maybe I should have done something different. Any advice.
Sweet corn (also corn, maize) 13 Dec, JPVD (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi all. my second shot at corn is going great. 6X2 block and all about 2 metres tall. F1 hybrids meant a result from direct cross-parenting. If you replant seeds from F1 plants, you are actually growing F2!
Pumpkin 12 Dec, Lisa van der Lee (Australia - temperate climate)
I have some pumpkin seedlings given to me by a friend. Prepared the soil a few days ago and I can't wait to get them into the ground. First shot at growing them. My cucumbers have been really successful so I am motivated to try pumpkin as we eat it alot and the kids love it. Fingers crossed they grow well!
Shallots (also Eschalots) 11 Dec, GB (Australia - temperate climate)
To Stuart: Depends where you live. In WA they are for whatever reason considered a pest and as such the seeds cannot be imported into the state (but you can grow from bulb???). Maybe try the diggers club (google it).

Cucumber 11 Dec, Tiggerbow (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi john d, It is possbile that that is as big as the cucumber/zuchinni was going to get. It is best to pick these fruits when they are still rather small. I have heard that when a cucumber goes dark green and the little spike start to grow on them they are ready. With a zuchinni is is best to pick when they are around 15 cm or so for nice sweet fruit. Apparently with zuchinni you are supposed to be able to pierce it with your fingernail. Both of these fruit grow very fast so it is best to check them at least every day. We have had success growing these for the first time this year. Good luck and happy eating !! Jodie
Tomato 11 Dec, Helena (Australia - temperate climate)

I was wondering if anyone could help me-I have two small plants in a medium sized pot and they started off growing so well and fast inside during the end of Winter but now they seem to have stopped growing. They are about 25cm high and when I put them outside they wilt but inside they seem to not grow at all. Any advice? Thank you!
Broccoli 10 Dec, (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
I have grown brocolli successfully this year for the first time and we have had many meals with them, but now they are flowering and I don't know whether to pull them out or leave them to go to seed. Will they self seed and come up again next year?

Shallots (also Eschalots) 09 Dec, STUART (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Has anyone any ideas of where i can purchase some seed for these french shallots, I have hunted everywhere locally to no avail any help will be most appreciated
Shallots (also Eschalots) 02 Sep, Cygnetian (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Stuart, if you happen to be in Tassie, Mitre 10 tends to sell them, but only in the winter, a few months before they're due to be planted. I bought some red shallots a few years ago from Mitre 10 marketed by Trenton Cottage Bulbs . Apparently, however, this season there was a problem with red shallots - some kind of disease on the mainland or something. Basically, keep an eye out in winter in the hardware stores and nurseries. I think they pretty much always sell out, like potatoes.
