Garlic 15 May, Neville Chandler (Australia - temperate climate)
Eden seeds in Queensland supply garlic bulbs for planting. They appear to sell in minimum of 1 kg lots. I bought some purple garlic and it appeared within 7 days of planting.
Collards (also Collard greens, Borekale) 15 May, Iina L (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
I'm also looking for collard green seeds that will grow in a sub-tropical climate (Queensland). It would be nice to find a variety that looks nice in the garden as well as being edible. Can anyone give guidance?
Collards (also Collard greens, Borekale) 18 May, (Australia - temperate climate)
Eden seeds might be able to help - they have collard seeds and are in Queensland.
Rosella (also Queensland Jam Plant, Roselle) 13 May, Lisa (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
I would like to preserve the rosella flowers for a friend, like they do commercially for the bottom of your champagne glass. Can anyone help?
Rosella (also Queensland Jam Plant, Roselle) 23 May, (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Lisa, I've never seen the flowers like this - are they dried out or soft enough to eat when you've finished your champagne?
Rosella (also Queensland Jam Plant, Roselle) 24 May, Meredith (Australia - temperate climate)
They're usually preserved in syrup, so they're a bit chewy at the end of the champagne but quite edible.
Pumpkin 13 May, lyn (Australia - temperate climate)
what causes fully formed butternut pumpkins to split along the length?
Pumpkin 08 Mar, Andrew (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
I have 9 Jap pumpkins growing. A lot of the vine has died back but the stems are still green. I noticed a couple of the pumpkins have split. Any ideas why? And are they still edible?
Snow Peas (also Sugar Peas, Mangetout, Chinese Peas) 12 May, sara (Australia - temperate climate)
They might need to just grow a bit longer. A bit too late for you, but a pinch or two of potash in the trench when you plant is good for peas.
Snow Peas (also Sugar Peas, Mangetout, Chinese Peas) 19 May, Annaliese (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi, pot ash from a fire? Or can you buy this from a nursery?
Snow Peas (also Sugar Peas, Mangetout, Chinese Peas) 21 May, (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi Annaliese, Potash (mostly potassium carbonate) from a nursery is what I use. A bag will last for years unless you grow 'commercial quantities' of peas.
NZ Spinach (also Warrigal greens) 12 May, Bryan Clark (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
New Zealand Spinach grows well in Alice Springs, but I am finding it difficult to obtain seed for same in Australia.
NZ Spinach (also Warrigal greens) 13 May, Grahame (Australia - temperate climate)
Eden seeds have NZ spinach seed (Warragul greens is the other name).
NZ Spinach (also Warrigal greens) 23 Sep, Jay (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Thanks Grahame, I so love that people are commenting on Eden seeds. Organic seeds are the only ones to buy. GM seeds are a serious threat to the freedom of gardening. only brands that are organic will re-seed properly and grow again and again. We gardeners must maintain the simple right to grow organic, healthy food.
Carrot 12 May, Liam (Australia - tropical climate)
Any tips on growing carrots in Townsville?? I am doing it as a school project and it would be good to have some tips. Thx
Carrot 14 May, Chris@Gardenate (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Liam, take a look at the top of the page. Switch to tropical zone and all the planting information will apply to Townsville.
Basil 12 May, Rachel (Australia - temperate climate)
How do I make my basil grow fuller? does anyone know how my plant needs to be groomed to grow thick and lustrous? thanks
Basil 12 May, (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Your basil will grow more 'bushy' if you nip off the growing tips once the plants are well-established. They will send out lots of side-shoots and bush out. Also, I found watering with a seaweed-based liquid fertiliser helps.
Garlic 11 May, Maryanne (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
My question isn't about garlic but ginger. I'm wondering why gardenate has no reference to ginger? :(
Garlic 13 May, Chris@Gardenate (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Hi Maryanne, we set up gardenate to provide reminders for planting veges. It's expanded a bit since then, but we haven't got around to ginger yet.
Broad Beans (also Fava bean) 11 May, Bernie (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Hi Gardenate, thank you for the prompt reply.I find the information of seeding of the year very useful , spacing depth of Seed etc, would like a comment about each plant seed, like,' LIKES LIME, ACID SOIL, LOTS OF WATER, WATER SPARINGLY, HOT SUNNY POSITION, etc.You get my drift !Bernie
Broad Beans (also Fava bean) 11 May, Chris@Gardenate (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Bernie, thanks for your suggestions. Some of that information will be available very soon when I get the crop rotation information into the web site.
Collards (also Collard greens, Borekale) 10 May, Eva Dent (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Collard greens, how should i ask for them . are these a group of vegetables with names. ?
Collards (also Collard greens, Borekale) 18 May, (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Eva, they are a plant called collards - a type of loose-leafed cabbage.
Garlic 10 May, Glen (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
can someone advise where to buy good garlic for planting in the Blue Mountains/western sydney area?
Garlic 20 May, Lesley White (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
The Food Co-op in Penny Lane off Katoomba St in Katoomba Sells organic produce including local garlic, I have planted it in my own Garden with great success. Cheers, Lesley.
Garlic 06 Feb, jen (Australia - temperate climate)
The kids at Katoomba High School also grow garlic to sell as a fundraiser. Contact the school.
Rosella (also Queensland Jam Plant, Roselle) 10 May, carol (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
To dry the rosellas, separate the seed and dry the red calyx in an electric dehydrator. Use the dried flesh for a lovely cup of tea, adding sugar if desired. I made some teabags from dressmakers light interfacing, from the drapers, adding a cotton thread tag.
Snow Peas (also Sugar Peas, Mangetout, Chinese Peas) 10 May, nicole (Australia - temperate climate)
