Beans - dwarf (also French beans, Bush beans) 05 Oct, Jumbee (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Bean seeds germinated properly and I have planted as directed in the packet. Should I put any support for the plants for climbing? Or its okay to let them grow by their own? because I found the stem is very soft. Thank you.

I have the same question do I need to use stakes or some other form of support ?

Hi - you don't need to stake dwarf or bush beans. They only grow to 40-60 cm tall and support themselves. Climbing beans, on the other hand, of course need something to climb up.

I don't stake my beans. But I do put stakes at the end of each row and run some string along both sides of the row so it can hold up the branches. So they are leaning over the string. It keeps them off the groung and stops them from getting to tangled.

I like the idea of the stakes and string. I shall try that.

My Brussel sprouts are growing well about 80cm tall but the sprouts are still only pea size. They were planted end of June. Will the sprouts develop from here or is it now too late for them? Also have celery growing well but all pencil thick, planted at the same time - will the stems thicken now? Many thanks for your help Susan

Does anyone know where I can purchase some Celeriac seeds or bulbs in Western Australia
Celeriac 29 Jan, Tracy (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Try your state Renaissance Herb supplier - there is one grower for every state.
Celeriac 15 Oct, Hagar (Australia - temperate climate)
I buy mine from Greeharvest.com.au they are in QLD and ship to WA. Delivery takes while because of quarantine in WA, all seeds so far have been good and viable.

If you are near a bush area it is probably rats. I have recently had to relocate (trapped) 3 bush rats (there are other ways of dealing with them of course). They were eating my silver-beet and beetroot right back. Now starting to grow again.
Lemon Balm (also Sweet balm, ) 23 Sep, Jay (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Lemon balm is the most amazing healing plant. I have used it as a herbal infusion (handful brewed in a teapot or even just a teacup) for tick bite, respiratory problems, inflamation, stress, fever and many others. Fantastic herb for the garden. I love it!
Dill 23 Sep, Jay (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Dill is an amazing companion plant. Plant it amongst your brassicas (broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower etc) and it will keep away the cabbage moths. Plant it a little earlier to set up the patch. It's wonderful to eat with any potato or cheese dish and has abundant seed to replant.
Rutabaga (also Swedes) 20 Sep, Pam, Western Australia-Temperate (Australia - temperate climate)
When in UK on holiday I found that swede seemed much sweeter than here. Anyone know what variety they are and if can grow or buy here (WA).
Rutabaga (also Swedes) 07 Mar, David Allison (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
A slight frost will sweeten swedes - experiment by putting a swede in your deep freeze for an hour or more (depends on the size of the swede)
Rutabaga (also Swedes) 08 Oct, Tassy Michele (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Hiya Pam, I grew up eating swede and still love it. I think the sweetness is in the cooking. Mum used to peel and dice swede and put in pot in cold water, bring to boil and pour off water (it is often a brownish colour and bitter to taste). She would then cover in cold water and sprinkle a scant teaspoon of sugar on, and simmer until cooked. Mash and add a dob of butter ....... YUM. She cooked broad beans and brussel sprouts in the same way. Swede is also very nice oven baked as you would potato wedges. Try sweet potato, carrot and parsnip the same way .... even my young boys loved veg like this. Cheers
Capsicum (also Bell peppers, Sweet peppers) 20 Sep, Celia Hale (Australia - temperate climate)
I would like to grow capsicum in a green house, can someone tell me the size of the planter bag I will need to use and the space between each plant
Capsicum (also Bell peppers, Sweet peppers) 08 Oct, Tassy Michele (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Hiya Celia, Follow the "Vegetables & Herbs" planting guide --- Wikipedia can also be a useful and informative guide. Cheers
Sweet corn (also corn, maize) 20 Sep, Jay (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
traditionally corn has been used as a climbing post for peas as the peas put nitrogen back into the soil that the corn has taken out. My question is that corn and peas are opposite planting times so how does this work? Anyone?
