Lettuce 13 Aug, Glenn (Australia - arid climate)
I am trying to identify which lettuces handle the heat better than others. We live in outback SA but we have plenty of water and I can erect shade, but I can't do much about the heat. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Lettuce 14 Nov, JETset (Australia - temperate climate)
What part of Outback SA? If you look at the Diggers site (diggers.com.au) they have a few slow to bolt varieties. That is all I could suggest as I believe it is the heat which causes bolting. Goldrush and Flame are 2 you could try. I am in Adelaide and will probably have the same issue when it gets to late January. Cheers and Good luck
Sunflower 12 Aug, Tony (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
I transplanted 4 sunflowers from seedling pots and they grew very well. They were about 10cm tall when I did this.
Parsnip 12 Aug, (Australia - tropical climate)
someone suggested to twist off the tops from parsnips so the leaves do not draw moisture from the roots. is this correct? if so at what stage of growth.
Parsnip 10 Aug, adam (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
You twist the leaves off when you dig them up to eat. It stops them going rubbery. Not while they're still growing.
Pumpkin 12 Aug, judy farrelly (Australia - tropical climate)
I notice that a lot of growers say that when a pumpkin sounds hollow, it is ready to pick; I have heard that you are supposed to leave them until the vi ne is dead; is this also true?
Eggplant (also Aubergine) 11 Aug, ray (Australia - tropical climate)
can egg plant be frozen and used later
Pumpkin 10 Aug, judy farrelly (Australia - tropical climate)
to arthur stevens: you will probably find the bees have not pollinated your pumpkin flowers, thus the young fruit fall off; you could try hand pollinating them yourself; that's what I had to do this year (in CCairns)
Leeks 09 Aug, Joe Cassar (Australia - temperate climate)
I live on the south coast, Sanctuary Point in the Jervis Bay area. I put leek seeds early winter and probably think now that I should have put the seeds in around late summer or early autumn. When is the best time to grow leek?

Yam/Oca (also Oka) 09 Aug, sonia wilson (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi, Have just bought some yam bulbs and was wondering what yeild I could expect per bulb and does it increase per bulb per year or remain the same. I live in Melbourne.
Silverbeet (also Swiss Chard or Mangold) 09 Aug, Alison (Australia - temperate climate)
I have several silverbeet in the garden that are doing fantastic, and just keep on growing more and more leaves every time we harvest some. Planted in March, and at this stage show NO signs of stopping growing! Late this month, we need to pull everything out of the garden bed to top it up (its a no-soil, no dig garden) and prepare it for the warmer season crop - will it hurt if I transplant a few of these mature silverbeet plants into another big pot so I can keep harvesting the leaves???
Rosella (also Queensland Jam Plant, Roselle) 05 Aug, Myrna (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Are Rosellas considered an acid or Alkaline fruit?
Rosella (also Queensland Jam Plant, Roselle) 08 Jan, Julie Kraemer (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Dies anyone know if they are acid or alkaline?
Kohlrabi 05 Aug, Ruth Rae (Australia - temperate climate)
Why do half my seedlings form bulbs but tthe rest just thicken a little up the stem? These are quite useless . I have tried them at different times of the year and the result is always the same
Kohlrabi 04 Sep, Roger (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi Ruth; No answers but i have the same problem! No big swollen bottoms like in the photo. just thick stalks

Broccoli 02 Aug, lauren (Australia - temperate climate)
While the information given is fantastic and helpful, especially as i am a novice, none of the plants note how much sun they like which i assumed was quite an important part of growing plants? I would like to grow Broccoli (among others) but my garden space does not get very much sun especially during winter.
Broccoli 06 Aug, jade (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
pretty well all vegies like full sun
Cauliflower 31 Jul, Ben Fergusson (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Hi Karen had the same problem till told by a commercial grower to tie all the leaves together over the head and water well each day walla it worked
Cauliflower 30 Jul, Karen (Australia - temperate climate)
My cauliflower plant looks good but the head or curds are not close together but spread and look as if it has gone to seed. what have i done wrong?

Chinese cabbage (also Wong bok, wong nga pak, napa cabbage) 29 Jul, Chrissie (Australia - temperate climate)
For the best Wombok recipe EVER - Google Chang's Oriental Fried Noodle Salad and get the recipe from the Chang's website. My partner demands that I make it at least once a fortnight - so I am growing my own Wombok now! The dressing has the perfect balance of flavours.
