Ive tried to grow potatoes twice, but tiny and not many. I have very little sun in yard. Is this the problem? Grow them in containers

Cucumber 01 Nov, Julie howe (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Do you need to manually fertilise the females flowers with male pollen like we do with pumpkin ?
Carrot 01 Nov, Danielle (Australia - temperate climate)
My daughter decorated and planted carrot seeds at Bunnings. The bunnings seeds were on cardboard like matches that you stick in the soil. There was multiple seeds on each piece so when do i split up the plants so they have room to grow? The green tops are still very thin and fine but are starting to get that carrot looking leaf.
Carrot 18 Nov, John (Australia - temperate climate)
I wouldn't as carrots don't like root disturbance. wait till some are edible size and use them as baby carrots
Broccoli 01 Nov, Lyn (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Why should broccoli not be planted in the same bed as capsicum? Too late for me this time, although both seem to be doing well.
Rhubarb 31 Oct, Gary (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Hi, I live in Brisbane Australia and my rhubarb is in its first year of planting and is doing quiet well, do I let the stalks and leaves on the first year and then just drop off or do I pick them off Thanks Gary
Rhubarb 17 Nov, John Mauger (Australia - temperate climate)
The leaves on rhubarb, asparagus, etc., are building up the crowns. If your soil is well fed and there are plenty of stalks. taking a few shouldn't hurt. You will need to hold the plant at the base as you harvest so as not to pull the plant out or damage the root system which is soft and spongy
Choko/Chayote (also Chayote squash, christophene, chouchou, mirliton) 31 Oct, robert rowen (Australia - tropical climate)
can you freeze peeled choko for chips or baking thankyou
Choko/Chayote (also Chayote squash, christophene, chouchou, mirliton) 18 Nov, John (Australia - temperate climate)
I haven't tried it but would imagine it would thaw out soggy because of its high water content. Frozen Choko would be ideal to use in soup though. Chop it smll enough first.

Chilli peppers (also Hot peppers) 29 Oct, Vanessa (Australia - temperate climate)
Can i plant cayenne pepper seeds direct in the garden bed now that its a bit warmer?
Chilli peppers (also Hot peppers) 18 Nov, John (Australia - temperate climate)
Yes. That is what would happen naturally. Don't cover the seeds too deeply and mke sure they do not dry out.
Capsicum (also Bell peppers, Sweet peppers) 29 Oct, Vanessa (Australia - temperate climate)
Can i plant capsicum seeds direct in the garden bed now that its a bit warmer?

I have transplanted some beetroot seedlings and they are starting to die? I have watered them regurlary. What should i I do?
Beetroot (also Beets) 18 Nov, John (Australia - temperate climate)
All beets (root ones) are better if sown direct into the ground. They germinate fairly readily.

Tomato 26 Oct, Felicity (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Would love your Tips for growing tomatoes in the cooler climate of the Strathbogie ranges in Victoria. Approx 300 m above sea level We are wondering if we need plastic "igloos" to protect ? And any varieties that would be better suited to this climate Thanks !
Tomato 18 Nov, John (Australia - temperate climate)
You could try starting off seeds inside in the base of an egg carton in September. That will give you a head start. The soil temperature needs to be 15-17 degrees for them to thrive, usually end of October or early November. Alternatively plant seed of short season varieties like Stupice (60 days). Most varieties that originated in the northern states of America, Canada or Europe will be suitable for a short growing season. Planting them in a sheltered position on a North, North-East or East situation will also help.

Have eight cabbages growing nicely, about two feet tall - but no heads are forming. Have been fertilized, get sun (when it comes - a very wet winter up here at 705m). Advice welcome!

Yes very frustrating not to be able to buy a Horse radish plant in South East Queensland,, The shop bought horse radish cream , is very poor quality,
Horseradish 18 Nov, John (Australia - temperate climate)
Horse radish will be in leaf by now. You should be able to get it from places like Green Harvest' online. I am happy to send you a few pieces of root from my plants if you can't find it. Reply to this email if you want some. It is very easy to grow from pieces of root. just plant them with the thickest end level with the soil and they will soon sprout. Trust this helps.
