Try the internet, ask around at nurseries or Bunnings.

Crowns/plants don't usually become available until mid/late winter.
Basil 08 Apr, Dale (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
I have just pulled out about 10 basil plants ( lots of seedlings coming up) because I am so sick and tired of the cloud of grasshoppers taking residence in our veggie patch and eating the basil... Basil is one of my favorite herbs ,but these grasshoppers are really owning my patch...any advise would be much appreciated.

Try shade cloth or mossy netting over them for a few weeks.

Thanks Mike for the hint. I spotted an unusual roll of shade cloth at Bunnings, and it was very closely woven- I think it was a beige colour. But I got confused with all the price tags and descriptions that I just gave it a miss.(looks expensive) What is mossy netting and where do you buy it? Blessings to you on this fine day.

If you'd like to save money then go to an op-shop and pick up some net curtains. They're easy to find and will be very cheap. That will let the sun and air in but keep the bugs out

Mossy netting is mosquito netting - in the old days you hung this over your bed to keep the mosquitos out. They sell it at Spotlight - about $7/mr. What width I don't know. 70% shade cloth at Bunnings is approx. $5-7/mtr - that is 1.83m x 1mtr. It has multi uses in gardening.

Thanks Mike. With basil, do the leaves need to be picked small (do they go spindly/woody) or can they be picked big?

Strawberry Plants 08 Apr, David (Australia - temperate climate)
i have a small hothouse ( 3.0m x 2.0 m ) and am curious if i can grow both Tomatoes and Strawberries in the same hothouse, obviously not in the same pots but given the size of my hothouse in close proximity to each other ? Thanks in advance for any replies.
Strawberry Plants 20 Apr, Carol (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
As long as they're not sharing the same soil they'll be fine
Strawberry Plants 09 Apr, Mike (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
It says don't grow after tomatoes. Nothing about at the same time.
Beetroot (also Beets) 07 Apr, Jeffrey Williams (Australia - temperate climate)
My beetroot seedling leaves (grown from commercial seed) are getting eaten by something. I have eliminated slugs/snails, rats/mice and birds by adopting appropriate preventative measures. I am at wits end, as I have successfully grown beetroot for many years and this is the first instance I've had issues. Any advice would be appreciated.
Beetroot (also Beets) 23 Apr, David (Australia - temperate climate)
Do you have sugar cane straw as mulch. I have found the slaters and big brown grubs come out of the mulch at night and demolish anything new. I had the same problem as you with new beetroot seedlings and in desperation sparingly sprinkled some snail/slater bait amongst them. Whilst I never found any dead snails or slaters, the problem disappeared. Hope this helps.

50 or 70% shade cloth for awhile.

Tomato 04 Apr, Dale (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
I noticed on the veggie chart that tomatoes are not on the growing list for autumn. Is it possible to grow some now? I really want to grow some tomatoes.I have some cherry tomatoes struggling with things eating the fruit ,and they seem to be taking ages to ripen. I'm guessing it is this unusual weather we are having. At the moment it is wet and no sun.( Also I have noticed some tomato seedlings popping up in the patch.- might that be a sign that I can plant them ???)
Tomato 05 Apr, Mike (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Late March onwards is perfect for tomatoes. I have plants 600-700mm high and going great guns at the moment. An autumn and spring crop in sub tropical.

Lettuce 04 Apr, Eugenia Wen (Australia - temperate climate)
I have a question is that my letuce will not grow and it always is dying I always follow the step of growning a good letucd but is always dies please help Eugenia
Lettuce 05 Sep, Jane (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Eugenia - What I have found (so far) is that older types of lettuce have grown better where I am where-as the softer leaf ones struggle. A purple coloured one died. I am trying butter crunch, and all seasons lettuce at present although our climates are different. I have drought. You have heavy rains. Not sure any of this will help. You could try different types of lettuce and see what happens.
Fennel (also Bronze fennel) 03 Apr, Ollie (Australia - temperate climate)
I see that Fennel here is listed to be planted in Sept/Oct. However I find that Fennel is better as a winter crop with soups and I plant it March/April. It grows really well here in Perth.

Rhubarb 03 Apr, (Australia - temperate climate)
My 2 y/o rhubarb was growing well, then developed a coppery sheen on the leaves which go brown and papery, the stalks get soft, sag and go yellow. It is in raised area, watered regularly under the leaves, well manured and shaded from excessive summer heat. Any advice would be appreciated. Cathi.Dickinson
