To grow beet roots successfully what are the best tips........
Beetroot (also Beets) 10 Sep, Paul (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi Michael, what I have found is this: lightly manured / composted soil (too much nitrogen enhances leaf growth and not root growth - you want root growth). Loose / light soil becasue the root will struggle in thick/clay like soil. Spacing between plants is good if you can put a tennis ball between plants. Finally, when you pick them, twist off the leaves and throw into compost. Dont leave the leafs on.

I can get horseradish for you, but they will only be small plants, but now is the time to plant them out, and ready to harvest in autumn. I live in Kersbrook, so not far from you. Anyone else wanting horseradish, I can post to you if you like. Just send me your address. Cheers Cheryl (It's probably best to share email addresses on this forum -Liz)

I just got a big bag from my fruit n veg shop should I plant them now ? I was thinking of using a spud bag , any suggestions ? I planted some a few years back in my garden but they rotted - I think the soil was too heavy (red clay ) .

Jerusalem Artichokes (also Sunchoke) 18 Sep, Annette from Adelaide (Australia - temperate climate)
I purchased some tubers from the green grocer and instead of cooking them I waited until tiny shoots appeared and planted them. Huge success with each tuber providing well over a kilo.

Salsify (also Vegetable oyster) 15 Nov, Mordecai Veldt (USA - Zone 5b climate)
I am in a bind! I would really like to have some preserved salsify seed head puffs for my fiancee's wedding bouquet in may, but they won't be ready here in the USA by that time. If you are successfully growing them in Australia, we could work together to show you how to preserve them and have them shipped here? Can anyone help me out?
Salsify (also Vegetable oyster) 27 Nov, Louise Huber (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi Mordecai, I just found some growing wild yesterday. I picked one seedhead. The rest had not yet formed. I'm willing to have a go at preserving them for you. The seed head would look great in a bouquet. Louise Huber
Salsify (also Vegetable oyster) 18 Oct, PhilB (Australia - temperate climate)
I obtained my salsify seeds from New Gippsland Seeds & Bulbs and sowed seeds for the first time - seedlings are growing very well. reni, what spacings are using between seedlings/plants? (If you check the entry for salsify on the Vegetables and Herbs page you will find that information - Liz) Also has anyone had any experience growing scorzonera (aka Black salsify) ? I had very poor germination when I tried this year.

Chinese cabbage (also Wong bok, wong nga pak, napa cabbage) 01 Sep, Paul (Australia - temperate climate)
HELP ! I bought some 5 wks ago, already growing a little, gave them water etc, cold climate, but took them in at night to avoid frost. 5 weeks later 12" tall and with flowers. Gone to seed ? Meaning ? What do I do ? thanks
Chinese cabbage (also Wong bok, wong nga pak, napa cabbage) 09 Sep, Ray (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Happens to me a lot with the Chinese cabbage family. Found it best to plant from seed, 4 or 5 in a clump and thin to strongest. Then pick and eat as soon as they are a useful size. They go to seed faster in the warm weather.
Horseradish 01 Sep, ron (Australia - temperate climate)

Artichokes (Globe) 01 Sep, Danielle (Australia - temperate climate)
I have 3 plants in a pot that are ready to plant in the Swansea, Newcastle area. The soil is sandy but it does get hot in Summer. As I'm of French origin, I can't wait to to harvest my own artichokes but would it be better to replant them in very large pots?
Yam/Oca (also Oka) 01 Sep, James (Australia - temperate climate)
I got some yams from the market, just wondering how long until they start forming roots and foliage? It's still a little cold so I want to germinate them indoors under damp peat.
Yam/Oca (also Oka) 04 Sep, John Studte (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi James.I have found over the years that if you leave them until they sprout it is better. You also have the benefit of being able to cut them leaving sprout on each part and dip the raw ends into cement powder to seal.Wait 24 hours to dry then plant 50mm deep. You can plant in ground and cover with straw to protect them. John.
Dill 31 Aug, Lee (Australia - temperate climate)
I wouldn't even bother with planting them in pots first. They grow like weeds! I didn't mean to grow them last year but the wind blew a packet of my seeds onto my gravel walk way and since then, they have flourish and seeded themselves. Now I have to actually pull them out otherwise they would take over. Mind you the gravel walkway is compacted and doesn't have any nutrients at all. Seriously, just throw some seeds out in your garden and let them take care of the rest.
Cape Gooseberry (also Golden Berry, Inca Berry ) 31 Aug, Melody (Australia - temperate climate)
I live in Qld and you can often find the seeds you want on ebay or other seed selling sites. Be aware they cant always send to all states! Goodluck
Kohlrabi 30 Aug, adam (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Hi Amanda. When i lived in temperate Sydney, the kohlrabi was a lot less bulbous as well. Perhaps it is the region you live. Kohlrabi, and most of the family, grow slower in the cooler regions. I'm no scientist, but I've noticed this. Maybe it grows too quickly?. The same would apply to onions I think. I tried growing onions in the south of India a couple of years ago. The heat just turned them into spring onions, almost no bulb at all. Just a theory. Maybe you could try in the shady? It might work.
Kohlrabi 30 Aug, Amanda Grady (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
I have kohlrabi growing. Lots of leaves which are delicious cooked like spinach. Unfortunately there is no swelling at the base yet. How long should it take to start to see something. I have problem with onions not swelling also. Is this the same reason?
