S = Plant undercover in seed trays. P = Plant direct in garden where they are to grow.


  • Easy to grow. Grow in seed trays, and plant out in 4-6 weeks. Sow seed at a depth approximately three times the diameter of the seed. Best planted at soil temperatures between 46°F and 86°F. (Show °C/cm)
  • Space plants: 16 - 20 inches apart
  • Harvest in 7-9 weeks.
  • Compatible with: Dwarf (bush) beans, beets, celery, cucumber, onions, marigold, nasturtium, rhubarb, aromatic herbs (sage, dill, camomile)
  • Avoid growing with: Climbing (pole) beans, tomato, peppers (chilli, capsicum), eggplant (aubergine), strawberry, mustard
  • Calvolo nero kale
  • Scotch kale

Hi Vickie, I've actually been buying vegetable seeds off Ebay. There are lots of reputatable seed providers on there and I've been very happy about the viability of the seeds that I've purchased so far. I I actually bought Red Russian Kale seeds on Sunday night and I'm eagerly waiting to receive them! Have fun!

Over the winter & spring I have had a successful crop of kale growing in polystyrene boxes as well as in the garden in Brisbane. Some health food outlets have fresh kale leaves. Keep an eye out for cabbage moths they also love them.
